Artist Statement

My working background in the arts includes ten years as Fashion Designer/Creative Director for Rusty Surfboards Australia and five years working for the Kerry Stokes Collection (Art Department and Assistant to the Indigenous Art Curator) in Western Australia.

My art practice continues to explore the performativity of painting incorporating textiles and embellishments. The imagery draws on my everyday experiences of living near Wollongong in NSW.  This suburb reflects the post-World War Two diaspora of European families in its architecture and gardens.  The images and fabrications of the everyday are mediated through my engagement with personal narratives (my Australian-Greek-Irish heritage), childhood memories, humour and an expanded painting and textile practice (mainly using velvet as a substrate).

My research interests include: painting/expanded painting; spaces and the detritus from these spaces; interrogating traditional domestic spaces and bodies; the natural world and suburban world and speculative narratives.
